The fish has been identified and named by Mathews Plamoottil, head of the Department of Zoology, BJM Government College, Chavara, in Kollam.

His research was funded by the Science and Engineering Research Board of the Department of Science and Technology. Bioscience Research has published an article on the discovery.

Encountered in a small waterbody in Venlankanni, Puntius sanctus is small, it grows to a length of 7 cm.

 Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has received a patent for its method of manufacturing highland lunar soil simulant.

The simulant is made in bulk from similar rock samples identified and picked out from Sittampundi Anorthosite Complex, almost 67 km from Salem, in Tamil Nadu.

The procedure has satisfied all aspects such as mineralogy, bulk chemistry, grain size distribution and geo-mechanical properties. The method used for preparing the lunar simulant is cost-effective, reproducible and easy to scale up

Kumar Sangakkara set to serve second term as MCC president

Former Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara is set to serve his second term as the president of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) as the current activities have been postponed at the club.

The proposal will be voted on at the club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on June 24 this year and during the meeting, the club will also consider raising funds through a new life membership scheme, in order to keep the redevelopment of the Compton and Edrich Stands on course

The life-membership scheme was previously adopted in 1926 and 1996 to fund the redevelopments of Lord’s Grandstand, and it is expected to cost between 7,000 pounds and 80,000 pounds, depending on the age of the applicant.

Three new fish species found in the Western Ghats

hree new species of Filament barbs, a group of small freshwater fishes, have been discovered in the Western Ghats. These were discovered after collaborative research by scientists from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune, the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS).

The scientific paper presenting these results was published in the international journal – Vertebrate Zoology, published from the Senckenberg Museum in Germany.

Filament barbs are found in the rivers of peninsular India and Sri Lanka from where around nine species are currently known under the genus Dawkinsia.
