Kumi Naidoo appointed as next Secretary General of Amnesty International

South African human rights activist Kumi Naidoo has been appointed as the next Secretary General of Amnesty International.

 He will take over from Indian activist Salil Shetty in August 2018.

Kumi Naidoo is a South African human rights activist and previously the International Executive Director of international environmentalist group Greenpeace.

He was the first African to head the organisation.

He was also the Founding Chair of the Global Call to Action against Poverty and Secretary General and CEO of CIVICUS, the World Alliance for Citizen Participation.

International Human Solidarity Day

The General Assembly, on 22 December 2005, by resolution 60/209 identified solidarity as one of the fundamental and universal values that should underlie relations between peoples in the Twenty-first century, and in that regard decided to proclaim 20 December of each year International Human Solidarity Day.

By resolution 57/265 the General Assembly, on 20 December 2002, established the World Solidarity Fund, which was set up in February 2003 as a trust fund of the United Nations Development Programme. Its objective is to eradicate poverty and promote human and social development in developing countries, in particular among the poorest segments of their populations.


International Human Solidarity Day is:

    a day to celebrate our unity in diversity;
    a day to remind governments to respect their commitments to international agreements;
    a day to raise public awareness of the importance of solidarity;
    a day to encourage debate on the ways to promote solidarity for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals including poverty eradication;
    a day of action to encourage new initiatives for poverty eradication.


To promote solidarity, World Solidarity Fund was established.

the Beijing 2022 Organising Committee (BOCOG) unveiled the official emblems of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 at a ceremony at the National Aquatics Centre in the Chinese capital.

The emblems of the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games have been named "Winter Dream" and "Flight," respectively.

Emblem creator Lin Cunzhen also co-designed the emblem for the Summer Youth Olympic Games Nanjing 2014. Her design was chosen from a total of 4,506 submissions from around the world. 

China unveiled emblems for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics inspired by Chinese calligraphy

Beijing, which hosted the Olympics in 2008, will become the first city ever to hold both the summer and winter Games

The Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games emblem was similar in design and resembles the Chinese character for "flight" in calligraphy.

Human Rights Day is celebrated annually across the world on 10 December every year.
