the International Rice Research Institute's South Asia Regional Centre (ISARC) campus was inaugrated in Varanasi.

The centre will serve as a hub for rice research and training in South Asia.

UNGA adopted Russian resolution on international information security

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 5, adopted a Russian resolution on international information security (IIS) titled "Developments in the field of information and telecommunications in the context of international security."

Russia and India have joined their efforts for achieving democratic, inclusive and transparent United Nations negotiation process on security in the use of information and communications technologies

The resolution was supported by several countries and co-authored by over 30 countries.

Opening a new page in the global discussion on international information security which was launched 20 years ago, the issue of international security was first placed on the UN's agenda in 1998 at Russia's initiative.

The document includes a number of innovations, starting with a provisional list of 13 international rules, norms and principles of responsible behaviour of states in this sphere.

Russia has also recommended making the United Nations negotiation process on security in the use of information and communications technologies more democratic, inclusive and transparent.

With this aim in view, Russia has proposed convening open-ended working group (OEWG) acting on a consensus basis.

Krakatoa, or Krakatau is a volcanic island situated in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in the Indonesian province of Lampung.

The name is also used for the surrounding island group comprising the remnants of a much larger island of three volcanic peaks which were obliterated in a cataclysmic 1883 eruption.

 The privately developed BizBarde app will "allow the exchange of messages, files, photos and videos

The service was tested for several months before its Monday launch and some 5,000 people have already downloaded the app

The application is available via the Google Android platform as well as Apple's iOS and Microsoft Windows.

Lewis Hamilton awarded Drivers' Driver of the Year

After claiming a historic fifth World Drivers' Championship, Lewis Hamilton has won the inaugural Drivers' Driver of the Year.

This was the first time the vote had been run by the F1 , with seventeen of the 20 drivers taking part.

Points were handed out based on F1’s current system, with 25 points given to the top driver on each list.

Hamilton  became just the third man in history to secure a fifth world title.

Max Verstappen was in second place, after finishing the season with five straight podium finishes.

rookie Charles Leclerc in an impressive sixth place.

China launched first satellite for space-based broadband

China today launched its first communication satellite to provide broadband internet services worldwide


The satellite is the first in the Hongyun project planned by China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp (CASIC).

The Hongyun project, started in September 2016, aims to build a space-based communications network to provide broadband internet connectivity to users around the world, especially those in the underserved regions.  

The spacecraft is tasked with verifying basic designs of Hongyun satellite and demonstrating low-orbit broadband communications technologies

The satellite is expected to work beyond its design life of one year.

China's Commerce Ministry   confirmed that Beijing and Washington intended to conduct trade negotiations in January.

 the two sides working groups were in close contact.

 the countries would hold meetings and arrange phone talks to implement the agreements reached by the two countries leaders.

On December 18, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that the United States and China would organize trade negotiations in January.

According to Mnuchin, both sides are trying to deliver an agreement by March 1.

Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Argentina where they agreed to call a truce in their escalating trade war.

The Prime Ministers of Macedonia and Greece, Zoran Zaev and Alexis Tsipras, have been nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.

They have been nominated for signing the Prespa Agreement between the two countries.


The 2015 Nobel Peace Prize winner and Tunisian economist Ouided Bouchamaoui announced the nomination in Skopje .

 
In mid-June, Macedonia and Greece came up with a final deal after a long process of negotiations to solve the name dispute.

EU to reduce new car emissions by 37.5 per cent by 2030

The European Union (EU) forged ahead with plans to slash carbon dioxide emissions from new cars and vans by 2030.

EU member countries and the European Parliament signed the ambitious deal   that Brussels said would help the bloc meet its commitments under the Paris climate accord.

The targets will require new cars sold in 2030 to emit 37.5 percent less carbon dioxide on average compared to 2021 levels.

 Emissions from new vans will have to be 31 percent lower.

Miguel Arias Canete, the European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy said that with these ambitious targets, Europe is once again showing how to turn the ParisAgremeent and COP24 into action.

Ambassadors from EU countries are to expected to endorse the deal in Brussels

The affluent nations which are the main polluters agreed to pay for greening in the underdeveloped world.

 The European Parliament on Wednesday approved an accord with Japan that has been said to be the world’s biggest trade deal, covering economies that represent a third of global GDP.

The agreement will go into effect in February,

EU Trade Commissioner is Cecilia Malmstrom.

  lawmakers voted by 474 votes to 152 to back the deal,

Covering more than 630 million people and economies that add up to around a third of global output, the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement has been under discussion since 2013.

When it goes into effect it will regulate almost all commerce between the Asian giant and the 27 remaining EU economies and, will benefit in particular European farmers.

 This agreement is projected to increase exports between the two economies by 34 percent for the EU and 29 percent for Japan, liberalizing up to 99 percent of bilateral trade

Once the accord is fully implemented, some 85 percent of EU farm products will be eligible for tariff free export to Japan, although in some cases this will come after a period of transition.

Sweden is banning outdoor smoking in certain public places including playgrounds and train station platforms.

In a 142-120 vote the Riksdagen, the Swedish Parliament extended the smoking ban as of July 1, 2019.

Smoking in outdoor restaurants and entrances to booths for smokers will also be banned.

Smoking is currently allowed only in designated smoking areas in most workplaces and public places.

According to the new law, the goal is to make the Scandinavian country smoke-free by 2025.

Human Rights Day is celebrated annually across the world on 10 December every year.

Bennu is a  Carbon-rich asteroid ,

it could hold evidence dating back to the beginning of our solar system 4.5 billion years ago, is an astronomical time capsule.

After  two-year  a NASA spacecraft arrived on December 3 at the ancient asteroid Bennu

The robotic explorer Osiris-Rex is within 19 km of the diamond-shaped space rock.

It will get even closer in the days ahead and go into orbit around Bennu on Dec. 31.

No spacecraft has ever orbited such a small cosmic body.

It is the first U.S. attempt to gather asteroid samples for return to Earth, something only Japan has accomplished so far.


  Bennu is some 122 million km away from earth

Lockheed Martin in Littleton, Colorado  company built the spacecraft 

Bennu is estimated to be just over 1,600 feet (500 m) across.

Researchers will provide a more precise description at a scientific meeting on December 10 in Washington.

 the spacecraft will follow the asteroid for a year

it will  return to Earth in 2023.


A Japanese spacecraft,  has been hanging out at another near-Earth asteroid since June, also for samples

 It is Japan’s second asteroid mission.

it is named Ryugu and about double the size of Bennu.


The $800 million Osiris-Rex mission began with a 2016 launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Both the spacecraft and asteroid’s names come from Egyptian mythology.

 Osiris is the god of the afterlife, while Bennu represents the heron and creation.

Osiris-Rex is a NASA acronym for origins, spectral interpretation, resource identification, security-regolith explorer.

IAAF appointed Jon Ridgeon  as CEO

British former hurdler Jon Ridgeon has been appointed chief executive of athletics' governing body the IAAF.

Ridgeon, 51, competed in both the 110m and 400m hurdles between 1984 and 1996, winning silver in the shorter event at the 1987 World Championships.

Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric won the 2018 Ballon d'Or, becoming the first player other than Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the award in more than a decade.

Modric,   won his third successive Champions League in May before helping Croatia to a first World Cup final.

Former Brazil and AC Milan forward Kaka, in 2007, was the last player other than Messi or Ronaldo to win it.

Ronaldo, who joined Juventus from Real Madrid in the summer, came second.

UN conference on climate change began in Poland

The 24th meeting of Conference of Parties (COP-24) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has begun at Katowice, Poland today.

 The Conference will continue till 14th of this month.

COP-24 is very significant as it is expected to finalise guidelines for implementation of the Paris Agreement adopted in 2016.

India expects that COP-24 should be able to frame guidelines, which are pragmatic and gives due consideration to challenges and priorities of developing countries.

he outcome of COP-24 should be balanced, inclusive, and consistent with the principles and provisions of Convention and its Paris Agreement.

 the Paris Agreement is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping the global temperature rise well below 2 degrees Celsius from pre- industrial revolution period.


The Agreement also focuses on developing countries need to adapt to adverse impacts of climate change, in a manner that it does not put an additional burden on them.


On the sidelines of COP-24, India will be setting up a Pavilion to create awareness about India’s positive climate actions in various sectors of the economy.

The theme of Pavilion is ‘One World One Sun One Grid’ as highlighted  during the first assembly of the International Solar Alliance on 2nd October this year.

The Conference of the States Parties at its 20th Session decided that a memorial Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare would be observed on 30 November each year or, when appropriate, on the first day of the regular session of the Conference.

  This day offers an opportunity to pay tribute to the victims of chemical warfare, and to reaffirm the commitment of Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to eliminate the threat of chemical weapons.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is an intergovernmental organisation and the implementing body for the Chemical Weapons Convention, which entered into force on 29 April 1997.
