World Day for Safety and Health at Work

In 2003, the International Labour Organization (ILO), began to observe World Day in order to stress the prevention of accidents and diseases at work, capitalizing on the ILO's traditional strengths of tripartism and social dialogue.

This celebration is an integral part of the Global Strategy on Occupational Safety and Health of the ILO, as documented in the Conclusions of the International Labour Conference in June 2003.

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work will aim to stimulate national tripartite dialogue on safety and health at work.

28 April is also the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers organized worldwide by the trade union movement since 1996.

World Intellectual Property Day

World Intellectual Property Day is observed annually on 26 April.

The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to "raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life" and "to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe"

 26 April was chosen as the date for World Intellectual Property Day because it coincides with the date on which the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization entered into force in 1970.

This event has been criticized by a number of activists and scholars as one-sided propaganda in favor of traditional copyright, ignoring alternatives related to copyleft and the free culture movement.

India's foreign exchange is USD 479.57 million

India's foreign exchange reserves surged by USD 3.09 billion to USD 479.57 billion in the week to April 17 due to an increase in foreign currency assets.

According to the latest data from the Reserve Bank of India, in the reporting week ended April 17, foreign currency assets (FCA), a major component of the overall reserves, rose USD 1.55 billion to USD 441.88 billion.

The RBI data showed that gold reserves increased USD 1.54 billion to USD 32.68 billion in the reporting week.

While,  special drawing rights with the International Monetary Fund,IMF were up by USD 3 million to USD 1.43 billion.

The country's reserve position with the IMF remained stable at USD 3.58 billion during the reporting.

On 25 April 1945, delegates from fifty countries came together for the first time in San Francisco.

Coming together after the devastation of the second world war, their aim was to set up an organization that would restore world peace and impose rules on the post-war world order.

International Mother Earth Day

International Mother Earth Day was established in 2009, by the General Assembly under Resolution A/RES/63/278.

 The Resolution was introduced by The Plurinational State of Bolivia and endorsed by over 50 member states

It recognizes that "the Earth and its ecosystems are our home" and that "it is necessary to promote harmony with nature and the Earth."

The term Mother Earth is used because it "reflects the interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet we all inhabit".

It is decided to designate April 22 as International Mother Earth Day

Mr. Rajan, 57, who was the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor for three years until September 2016, is currently working as a professor at the University of Chicago.

Other members of the group are Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Senior Minister of Singapore and Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore; Kristin Forbes, Professor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Kevin Rudd, former Prime Minister of Australia; Lord Mark Malloch Brown, former UN deputy secretary-general among others.

Anamika Roy Rashtrawar has taken charge as MD and CEO of General Insurance with effect from March 27, said a company release.

Prior to this elevation, Rashtrawar was whole-time director with the private general insurer, which she had joined in June 2018.

IFFCO Tokio General Insurance is a 51:49 joint venture between IFFCO and Tokio Marine Group.

Rashtrawar replaces Warendra Sinha, who retired from the company after leading it for three years.

A postgraduate in English from Kolkata University, Fellow of the Insurance Institute of India and a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter from The Institutes, USA, Rashtrawar has over three decades of experience in the insurance industry

Wisden name England all-rounder Ben Stokes leading cricketer in world

Ben Stokes has become the first Englishman since 2005 to be named Wisden's leading cricketer in the world.

Stokes played a key role in England's World Cup victory in July and was named man of the match in the final.

The 28-year-old scored a stunning 135 not out to lead England to a thrilling one-wicket victory over Australia in the third Ashes Test at Headingley.

Andrew Flintoff was the last England men's player to receive the award.

India captain Virat Kohli has won it for the past three years.

England pace bowler Jofra Archer has been named as one of Wisden's five Cricketers of the Year.

Australians Pat Cummins, Marnus Labuschagne and Ellyse Perry have been named alongside Archer, as well as Essex off-spinner Simon Harmer.

Perry, who is the first non-England women's player to appear as one of the five, has also been named the world's leading women's cricketer.

NASA is forging ahead with its Artemis program to land humans on the moon by 2024, but the agency has also just offered its first plan for what a U.S. lunar presence may look like after that milestone.

The new plan comes from a 13-page report submitted on April 2 to the National Space Council, an advisory group to President Donald Trump chaired by Vice President Mike Pence.

the report, titled "NASA’s Plan for Sustained Lunar Exploration and Development," summarizes the vision NASA has laid out for justifying and accomplishing the 2024 moon landing.

the report also looks farther out to focus on what a long-term presence on the moon and in lunar orbit would permit the U.S. to accomplish.

The FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup, which was scheduled to be played in India between November 2nd and 21st, has been postponed

In a statement, FIFA said, the new dates for the tournament will be identified later.

The decision was taken by the FIFA-Confederations working group in its first meeting held yesterday.

The working group also postponed FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup which was scheduled between August and September in Panama and Costa Rica.

Under-17 Women's World Cup was scheduled to be played in India across five host cities - Navi Mumbai, Guwahati, Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Bhubaneswar.

Expo 2020 organizers are mulling the postponement of the mega event by one year

Expo 2020 is a World Expo to be hosted by Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, scheduled to be opened on 20th October, 2020.

The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) will now work with its Member States and Expo 2020 Dubai organisers to establish a change in dates.

Expo 2020 Dubai convened a second virtual meeting of its Steering Committee, with representatives of the countries taking part in the event, as part of ongoing consultations that the impact of coronavirus, COVID-19, will have on global preparations of Expo 2020 Dubai.

Participating countries briefed the Steering Committee on the global precautionary measures that have to be taken to ensure the health and safety of all those involved in the preparation of this mega event.

Merger of 10 state-run banks into 4 to come into force from April 1

Reserve Bank of India has said that the merger of 10 state-run banks into four will come into force from April 1.

The branches of merging banks will operate as of the banks in which these have been amalgamated.

The government on March 4 had notified the amalgamation schemes for 10 state owned banks into four as part of its consolidation plan to create bigger size stronger banks in the public sector.

As per the scheme, Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India will be merged into Punjab National Bank; Syndicate Bank into Canara Bank; Allahabad Bank into Indian Bank; and Andhra and Corporation banks into Union Bank of India.

Under this, the branches of Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India will operate as branches of Punjab National Bank from April 1, and branches of Syndicate Bank as that of Canara Bank.

It informed that Allahabad Bank branches will operate as those of Indian Bank while the branches of Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank will function as the branches of Union Bank of India from the beginning of next fiscal year 2020-21.

Customers, including depositors of merging banks will be treated as customers of the banks in which these banks have been merged with effect from April 1, 2020.

The  Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts, EPCH has cancelled the 49th edition of Delhi Fair Spring-2020

Earlier, the fair was scheduled to be held from 15 to 19th of  April

The Textile Ministry said, the fair could  be organized in June or July.
